Period pains have often been given a blind eye especially by men who see it as an excuse women use in order to avoid their responsibilities.
However, there is more to period cramps than the stereotypical assumption that it only happens to weak women.
According to Doctor Lilumah Himoli from Kenya, the contraction of the uterus during the shedding of the uterine wall is the main cause of cramps. The uterus usually thickens in wait for fertilization and implantation but once none of that happens, prostaglandins trigger the uterine muscle contraction. The uterine lining then breaks down and leaves the body in form of blood clots.
“That contraction of the uterus is what causes period pains which most people call cramps.Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that help in conception, menstruation, luteolysis and parturition.Any woman can experience menstrual pain even though it varies from individual to individual depending on how heavy or light their bleeding is.Also, the more the prostaglandins, the more severe the pain,”he said.
He added that cramps can be experienced either before, during or after menstruation depending on an individual’s hormones.Diet is also considered a factor.
One of the home remedies stated include massaging the lower abdomen also known as the pelvic region with warm water. The essence of warm water is to break down the clots and make bleeding lighter therefore reducing the pain experienced.Engaging in gentle exercise can also help with the pain.
Dr Himoli urged whoever experiences cramps to take over the counter painkillers. However,if the pain is severe,it is necessary to visit a doctor for injection and screening for fibroids.
“Period pains are real and should not be taken lightly. There are cases of those who are unable to move or do anything because of the severeness of the pain. Many people also confuse cramps and fibroids no wonder it’s important to see a medical specialist whenever the pain is experienced,”Dr Himoli added.
Some common symptoms of uterine fibroids he stated include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, abdominal distension or cramps, irregular menstruation, spotting and pelvic pain.Pain may also be experienced in the abdomen and lower back.
Dr Himoli encouraged women experiencing period cramps to avoid coffee, soft drinks and any caffeinated beverages as these could increase period cramps. He also urged them to get enough rest as strenuous activities would increase the pain.
